Dokic labelled a laughing stock by players
By the ABC - January 20 2000
Reigning Wimbledon champion, Lindsay Davenport, wants to speak with Australian teenager Jelena Dokic about her controversial comments in the media.
Dokic has been labelled a laughing stock by the players.
World number two, Lindsay Davenport, says comments from Jelena Dokic this week have been shocking, dumb and laughable.
She has advised the 16-year-old not to let her quarter finals appearance at Wimbledon get the better of her.
She says Dokic's defeat of Martina Hingis at Wimbledon cannot be rated highly because the world number one was going through difficulties.
Davenport wants the chance to advise Dokic about criticising players and tournament organisers.
"I would definitely say something like, 'What are you thinking?' Hopefully we get a chance because some of the stuff she said was a little bit ridiculous," Davenport said.
But Dokic's doubles partner, Jennifer Capriati, has come to her defence saying nobody's perfect.
"I think a lot of things are blown out of proportion. She's just got to experience it unfortunately. Who knows really what the influences around her are?" Capriati said.
On the court, Capriati yesterday began her comeback from injury by defeating number 14 seed, Dominique van Roost.
Also bowing out, number 7 seed, Amelie Mauresmo, number 8 Todd Martin and number 9 Richard Krajicek. But there were no problems for Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Lindsay Davenport, Mary Pierce and Anna Kournikova. Mark Philippoussis, Andrew Illie and Richard Fromberg were the Australians to advance.
