Alain's Report on the Dokic vs Williams Match
By Alain Desmier - Posted on the mailing list in May 2000
I don't pretend to like Miss Williams, I don't like her attitude, I don't like her arrogance and I don't like her constant slandering of Women's tennis, but she is one of the most powerful players in the history of the WTA tour and for that she must be respected.
Taking all this into account the scene was set for a huge battle, a melee of meteoric proportions, a battle of Hastings on the Tennis Court, all that and more was delivered in a performance that now surely sees Jelena Dokic feared by every tennis player in the world.
I've written Jelena match reports for a year now but I don't think I have ever had so little to say. Jelena was simply too good for Venus. Some of the shots Jelena played this evening were not only amazingly powerful, Jelena seemed to have no problems with her accuracy.
It seemed like after every match we always used to say, if only Jelena could have been more accurate. Today, In the first set Jelena had just 8 unforced errors. Now for a girl who at the start of the year was making 40 unforced errors per set something has really clicked.
Maybes its Roche, maybes its Damir or maybes it Jelena's hard work, whatever it is I hope she keeps it up because I for one love writing about Jelena winning.
At one point in the match Jelena had won 9 straight games and Damir was seen to smile as Jelena broke Venus for the 9th. Damir Smile?!?! I hope someone caught it on camera that's the first time I think I have ever seen him smile since Wimbledon. Good on you Damir keep it up!
After this historic victory Jelena reflected on the match and spoke about tomorrow's game with Monica Seles. "I can win if I play well" You cant argue with that now can you! See you soon.
