Davenport reaches final for second year

Lindsay Davenport put herself in line for a second successive Wimbledon title by beating Jelena Dokic of Australia 6-4 6-2 in the semi-finals this afternoon.

In the final on Saturday Davenport will defend her title against Venus Williams in the first all American final since Martina Navratilova played Zina Garrison in 1990.

Davenport said of Venus Williams: "She looks to be playing really well and I will have to play my best to win.It is the first time I have played her on grass and I have got to return serve well and serve well."

Davenport was never under threat against Dokic who was playing in her first Grand Slam semi final.

The first set went to Davenport after 27 minutes at 6-4 after five breaks of serve which underscored the tensions of the match for the defending champion on one side of the net and the 17 year old Dokic on the other.

Dokic took a 2-0 lead,with Davenport slow to settle,but the champion was back level after four games. Davenport broke for a second time to lead 3-2 and go ahead for the first time but was pulled back as Dokic counter attacked.

But Davenport, hitting harder and with greater accuracy, took the Australia's serve for a 5-4 lead and served out for the set without problems.

The second set began well for Davenport with a break in the third game and she held serve to improve her position to 3-1. Dokic held serve in the next game and Davenport, after starting the sixth game by losing two out of the first three points held in a deuce game for 4-2.

A strong attack from the baseline,followed by a big forehand down the line gave Davenport the edge as she broke to lead 5-2--and with her serve to win to take the semi-final she rounded off victory with a backhand winner to match point and a service winner to finish it off.
